Dr. Childs’ Two-Cent Tuesdays

What is my “Two-Cents”

I recently began a new journey of putting more creative and helpful instructional tips related to literacy and the classroom environment on my social media accounts (as I have a small, but growing network of teachers that I interact with online).  For the past couple of weeks, I have shared “Teacher Tip Tuesdays” on my Instagram account.  However, since the name “Teacher Tip” is so common, I decided to rename these helpful bits Two-Cent Tuesdays.

Over the course of five years, I have transitioned completely to teaching in higher education, but my heart will always be in the K-12 setting– where I spent eleven years working primarily with fifth graders.  The love I have for building an inclusive and welcoming classroom environment will not go away.  Though the testing culture within my state hindered some of my creativity as an educator, I always found ways to make learning relevant and valuable.  Because I still have the need to put my creative ideas to use, I decided to create Two-Cent Tuesdays.

What topics will I cover?

  • Literacy Learning/Strategies
  • Culturally Relevant Pedagogy
  • The Classroom Environment
  • Parent Involvement
  • English Language Learners
  • Incorporating Technology in Instruction

Be sure to follow me on Instagram, as well as subscribe to my YouTube channel, where from time to time I will further elaborate on my tips, share additional resources, and have giveaways related to all things education!

Google Maps and it’s “street view” can take you and your students places that you might not be able to travel to, or even places within your community that your students don’t know about. From a literacy perspective: setting= places and surroundings…Are you giving your students perspectives outside of your classroom setting and their home environment? It’s not as difficult as you think. Share any ideas in the comments below of how you use technology to move your students outside of their classroom experience. #Literacy #ChildsTwoCentsTuesday #DigitalFieldTrips #Education #EducationalTechnology #BuildSchema

I’m guilty…I read the “fine print”. I read the backsides and labels on products. I read travel reviews. I pick up free travel brochures everywhere I travel. I even read the inside of chocolate bars (not a supposed to be a part of my diet, but see pic three, above). Books are VERY important, but how are we teaching students reading skills outside of using books? #DrChildsTwoCents #Education #Literacy #AlternativeAssesments #ThinkOutsideTheBox #ReadOutsideTheBox
